To promote a healthier community, Porter offers a wide variety of educational classes, special programs and support groups.

CPR - Health Care Providers Initial Course
This four-and-a-half hour course (9:30 am-2 pm) is designed for healthcare professionals to prepare them how to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an automated external defibrillator, and relieve choking in a timely and effective manner.

CPR - Skills Check-Off
BLS HCP Online Part 1

From the American Heart Association website, this is a flexible CPR training option for healthcare professionals. This program recognizes that healthcare professionals enter the course with knowledge and skills acquired from prior CPR training and years of patient care.
Fee paid on-line $17.50.

BLS HCP Renewal Skills
After completing BLS HCP Online Part 1, students complete the skills validation test with an AHA instructor. The completion form from the on-line course must be presented to the AHA instructor prior to the skills test. Upon successful completion of both parts, students will be issued an American Heart Association BLS - Healthcare Provider Course Completion card.

CPR for Friends & Family
For those wanting to gain knowledge of CPR but do not need to be certified, this American Heart Association program covers all of the basics of CPR and Choking for infants, children and adults. Practice on manikins follows a "watch and do" format.

Family & Friends First Aid for Children
This American Heart Association program includes a DVD that covers first aid for common childhood illnesses and injuries followed by discussion, questions and answers.

Lifestyle Changing Programs
Whether you’re interested in tips on stress management, weight control, living with a chronic illness, or other health issues, a new series of programs from Porter will help you make the right choices for a healthy lifestyle. Porter now offers lifestyle-changing programs at the Portage Township YMCA. Programs address a variety of health issues. Please call 219.263.7240 for more information.

Stress Reduction Through Guided Imagery
Unrecognized and ineffectively managed stress can profoundly impact personal health and happiness. Please join Holistic Nurse Susan Skinner, RN for an interactive and guided experience that will provide alternative and positive approaches to promote individual wellness through healing images. When Can I Drive Again?
If you have a family member whose driving skills have changed, have noticed a decline in your own visual skills, or are recuperating from a stroke or head injury, this driving program is your safety net back to the road. For more information, call 219.763.6858.
